I
have been puttin in a few miles on my new drive train. I did three
laps at Thomson Sunday mornin. It was a nice ride until my last
lap when I had to put a foot down while crossing the washed out
bridge. I stepped right into the creek. The water was past my
ankle deep. Made for a squishy ride out.
It's
been down right cold some mornins. Yep, in the low 20's. I have
a confession to make. I'm gonna come clean and tell everyone,
"I wore pants wile riding!" I never wear pants wile
riding in the winter. Well on this past MLK day when it was 22
I decided to try wearing pants on my sidewalk/backroads ride.
For Christmas this year I got a nice pair of Cherokee, Flat front,
Khaki pants. They are nice and big, perfect for wearing my bike
shorts under. I tied my right pant cuff tight around my ankle
as to not get in the chain. It worked perfect and I was plenty
warm for the 34 mile ride. So if its cold out don't be suprised
to see me riding in slacks.
I
registered for the 12
Hours of Santos. I'm on the hook for 12 Hours solo! It is
on Februrary 16th on the Vortex side of Santos. I'll be primitive
camping Friday and Saturday nights. I've already got a list of
things to get together for the trip. I just need to RIDE MORE
to Prepare for the race.

Ahhhh,
the beautiful sound of a new drive train. The smooth, non-gritty
sound is music to my ears. I bought a new Shimano
XT 11-34 Cassett and a XT Chain from The
Bike Store in Warner Robins for ~$98. I already had the new
Truvativ chain rings that came with the crank set I bought couple
months ago. I got it all put together tonight. The way the Weather
is Looking it may be a wile before I get to put any miles on them.

I
got the sad news yesterday that Ronnie Thomson of LH
Thomson passed away Saturday. A great man that will be missed.
He has provided a huge amount of Bicycle riding for a huge amout
of people. I couldn't even start to count how many hours I have
spent on his land enjoying cycling and fellowship with my bicycling
bretherin. Not to mention the seatpost I got free of charge due
to his generosity twards cycling volunteers. One memory of Ronnie
that stands out was when he interviewed me for a job at Thomson
back in 1992. At the time I had very long hair and earings in
both ears and riding my bike everyday. His first question to me
was "Are you one of those Mountain Bike Freaks?" I said
"yes I ride every day", needless to say I did not get
the job. I will be attending his
funeral wednesday.
This
past Sunday I car pooled over to Camp Thunder with Jeff D and
Mike B. I was lookin to get in some good miles after making such
a long trek to the trail. I was lucky that Jeff and Mike were
more than up for the challange of more than one loop around Thunder.
As we pulled into the parking lot we saw Ronnie F. (F for Freakishly
Fast). He was looking around for the trail head and was glad to
see some familiar faces. We all got ready and started off down
the rocky road. I was getting left behind already. I knew what
was in store for me just ahead. I knew better than to start out
quick and pop. I was gonna be chasing these guys the rest of the
day so I settled into a slow steady grind.
The
switch back climb was gruelling to start with but after my lungs
got use to gasping the cold, crisp air I leveled out and found
my pace, Granny Gear Slow. The trail was still covered up in leaves.
Jeff was the Lead for the day and I was fine with just following
for once. Seems every time I go to Thunder I'm always leading
someone around who has never been there before. Jeff took us down
some single track I have not been down since the mid 90's. There
were leaves up to your hubs in some spots. This was great! My
kinda mountain biking! They waited for me at the top of each climb.
We
made our way around back to the parking lot via the Woop-De-Woo
Down Hill. We all stopped at the Camp Ground to re-group and you
could smell the brake pads Burning! Ronnie Had to go but he left
us with a tasty Mojo
Bar. We ate a little snack, re-watered, then Jeff, Mike and
I were off again. Jeff was riding his GT
i-drive. Mike was on his Trek
69er Singlespeed! Amazing to wach him make almost all the
climbs. Jeff had the great idea of climbing back up the Woop-de-woos.
At first I was a little aprehensive but once I made it to the
top I felt like I had concered a small nation. We did a lot more
climbing and more bombing down hill through thick leaves. We basically
went around the same loop backwards finishing up with an arm pumping,
brake burning, Run Down the Switchback Climb. I was keeping them
in sight til about half way down. As I was letting it roll my
front end washed out and I cleared the trail of leaves with my
shoulder. I got up giggling and jumped back on without hesitation
and made it the rest of the way without incident. All in all an
Outstanding day of cycling and enjoying the great out doors.

Happy
New Year! I hope everyones 2008 has started out well. I got off
to a very productive start to the New Year by Running 2.5 Miles
and Riding 10.2 Miles (2 laps) at Thomson this morning. I contemplated
doing The
Bikes Store's Annual Road Ride but decided it would not be
a good choice beacause the forcast called for windy and cold weather.
I reset my Odometer this morning. I'm hoping I can make it through
2008 without having to reset it. I want to see how many miles
I pedal in 2008.
